Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2: Jem Cubil Semi-Finals Performance

It's the 3rd week of Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 Semi-Finals and another batch of 6 semi-finalists took the stage tonight, May 14, 2011, to compete for 2 slots in the grand finals.

Who do you think would own those 2 slots in the finals?

This 3rd batch of semi-finalists of Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 actually isn't hard to judge, as opposed to what judge Ai-Ai delas Alas said that it was a tough batch just like the previous 2 semi-final weeks.

Among the 6 semi-finalists who competed tonight, I'm sure most of you would like 17-year-old Jem Cubil from Talisay City, Cebu to advance to PGT Season 2 finals, while the other slot could either be for Dance Selection or Happy Feet.

For his semi-final performance, Jem Cubil sang David Cook's "Time of My Life" as he played the guitar.

Did you like his performance? Or did you like him as he is, Jem Cubil a good-looking teen guy who can sing well and play the guitar?

Kris Aquino and Ai-Ai delas Alas, just like how they admired Markki Stroem in Season 1, have appreciated Jem's looks and charm more than his musical talent.

Ai-Ai said: "Napaka-fresh mo ngayong gabi na 'to. Ang cute cute mo ngayong gabing ito." while Kris said: "Pamatay ang kagwapuhan mo!"

As a viewer myself, I actually didn't care about his singing. I was just looking at his face and smile as he stood there on stage. He was looking his best tonight.

Jem Cubil Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 finalists

Jem Cubil photo, PGT Season 2 contestant

I know this is Pilipinas Got Talent and not a star-search hunting for both good-looking and talented, but I think having the ability to charm the audience, which is a quality that every performer should have, is a talent and Jem has it.

Watch Jem Cubil's PGT Semi-Finals Performance:

    ***

This is how Mykiru's Poll ranks this week's batch of PGT Season 2 semi-finalists:

    1. Happy Feet, Bukidnon (Tap Dancing Brothers/Duo)
    2. Jose Emmanuel "Jem" Cubil, 17, Talisay City, Cebu (singer / musician)
    3. Dance Selection, Taguig City (cheerdancers / acrobats)
    4. Collins Gutierrez, 24, San Pedro, Laguna (singer)
    5. Rafael Pavia, 5, Matina, Davao City (singer)
    6. Zaldy Carlos, 38, Tondo, Manila (singer)

If Jem Cubil doesn't get the highest votes and be pitted against Happy Feet or Dance Selection for the judges' votes, he'll find it hard to enter the grand finals. Judge FHM might not pick him while judges Ai-Ai and Kris will be having a hard time to make a decision.

Here's how to vote for your favorite contestants:

    Just type

    PGT HAPPY for Happy Feet
    PGT JEM for Jem Cubil
    PGT DANCE for Dance Selection
    PGT COLLINS for Collins Gutierrez
    PGT RAFAEL for Rafael Pavia
    PGT ZALDY for Zaldy Carlos

and send it to 2331 for Globe, TM and Sun Cellular subscribers or 231 for Smart and Talk 'N Text.

John Lloyd Cruz dethroned as Box Office King

John Lloyd Cruz's 3-year streak as Box Office King has ended.

John Lloyd held the title beginning in 2007 for the movie "One More Chance", then the next year for "A Very Special Love" and again in 2009 for "You Changed My Life".

And for 2010, he almost retained the title with two box-office hits under Star Cinema: "Miss You Like Crazy" with Bea Alonzo and "My Amnesia Girl" with Toni Gonzaga.

But neither of the two films surpassed the earnings of the MMFF 2010 entries "Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote", which starred Sen. Bong Revilla Jr and Vic Sotto, under GMA-Regal Films and "Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To", starred Ai-Ai delas Alas, produced by Star Cinema.

Guillermo Mendoza Scholarship Foundation has officially announced that the Box Office King title for 2010 will be awarded to Sen. Bong and Vic, while the Box Office Queen is Ai-Ai delas Alas.

It goes to show that they already changed the ruling now. Instead of the December 31 cut-off, they used January 7 as the cut-off in determining who will be crowned with the titles.

    (I smell politics here.)

    December 31 Cut-Off:
    1. My Amnesia Girl P144.8M
    2. Miss You Like Crazy P143M
    3. Si Agimat At Si Enteng Kabisote P123M (estimated amount only)
    4. Here Comes the Bride P116M
    5. Petrang Kabayo P115.5M
    6. Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To P109M (estimated amount only)

    January 7 Cut-Off:
    1. Si Agimat At Si Enteng Kabisote P159M
    2. Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To P157M
    3. My Amnesia Girl P144.8M
    4. Miss You Like Crazy P143M
    5. Here Comes the Bride P116M
    6. Petrang Kabayo P115.4M P115.5M

This news saddens the fans of both John Lloyd and Toni 'coz the movie "My Amnesia Girl" was shown for a month only, from November 24 to December 24, and had to give way to the MMFF 2010 entries which opened on December 25.

"My Amnesia Girl" could have earned more than its final gross if it was extended for 1-2 weeks, just like John Lloyd's previous films which made him a Box Office King.

So maybe next time, if MMFF is coming in a month, don't release a new movie.

With the new ruling, it's most likely that the Box Office King and Queen titles for 2011 and the coming years will go to the stars whose movies were shown for the MMFF.

Shall we expect Ai-Ai, Bong and Vic getting the titles year after year?

Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2: Marcelito Pomoy, who sings like Regine Velasquez, is an early favorite

Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 contestant Marcelito Pomoy from Imus, Cavite, has become an instant favorite by the viewers of the said reality talent search after his audition was shown last night, March 5, 2011.

During the audition, Marcelito Pomoy sang Regine Velasquez's 'Narito Ako' to the surprise of the judges and the audience 'coz he sounds very much like Regine.

Yeah, and he is not an 'Anton Diva' 'coz when judge Kris Aquino asked, "Lalake ka talaga?" Marcelito said "yes".

He was also asked to sing more. He sang another Regine hit 'Sana Maulit Muli' and the song "Hanggang Ngayon", a duet of Ogie Alcasid and Regine.

For 'Hanggang Ngayon', he was able to do "doble-kara", sounding like both Ogie and Regine.

Marcelito's got an incredible talent that even judge Ai-Ai delas Alas commented, "Tapos na ang contest. May winner na."

Watch Marcelito Pomoy's audition video for Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 and be amazed:

Toni Gonzaga, Bea Alonzo or Ai-Ai delas Alas: Who will be crowned Box Office Queen for 2010?

Toni Gonzaga might get the Box Office Queen 2010 title for the film "My Amnesia Girl" opposite John Lloyd Cruz, who's also a possible Box Office King for 2010.

And that is if Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation (GMMSF), who gives out those titles, won't change its rules that only the movies' earnings until December 31 will be counted in determining the top-grossing film of the year.

According to the figures available at Box Office Mojo, "My Amnesia Girl" (MAG) was the top-grossing Pinoy film for 2010 with $3,288,330 or P144.81 million gross revenues.

In close 2nd is the John Lloyd-Bea Alonzo starrer "Miss You Like Crazy" (MYLC) with $3,183,529 or P142.97 million gross.

With that, it's no doubt that John Lloyd is 2010's Box Office King while Toni could be the Box Office Queen.

And since the earnings of the two above-mentioned films are very close, other tabulators might have different figures, and "Miss You Like Crazy" could possibly be the topgrosser. Its star Bea Alonzo might also be the Box Office Queen.

It will now all depend on what figures will be used by GMMSF.

How about the MMFF 2010 films?

Two of the MMFF 2010 entries, "Ang Tanging Ina Mo (Last Na 'To)" and "Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote", have collected earnings that are much higher than MAG and MYLC from December 25, 2010 to January 7, 2011.

But unfortunately, when only the earnings until December 31 are considered, the two MMFF entries failed to surpass that of MAG and MYLC.

"Ang Tanging Ina Mo: Last Na 'To" had P171 million gross receipts from Dec. 25 to Jan. 9 but counting until Dec. 31 only, it had an estimated gross of P109 million.

Same goes for "Si Agimat At Si Enteng Kabisote", which starred Bong Revilla and Vic Sotto. It had a high P159M gross revenues from Dec. 25 to Jan. 7, but only had P123M (estimated) from Dec. 25th to the 31st.

"Tanging Ina" lead star Ai-Ai delas Alas will for sure react again if ever she's not the 2010 Box Office Queen during the 2011 Box Office Entertainment Awards happening middle of this year.

In 2008, Ai-Ai was a bit disappointed that she was not crowned with the title. Sarah Geronimo was that year's Box Office Queen while Ai-Ai had to settle with Comedy Box Office Queen title (as a consolation).

And it seems like it's gonna happen again this year. Ai-Ai might just end up as Comedy Box Office Queen for 2010 as another consolation to her.

Here's how Pinoy films performed in the box-office for the year ended December 31, 2010:

    1. My Amnesia Girl P144,818,053
    2. Miss You Like Crazy P142,972,287
    3. Si Agimat At Si Enteng Kabisote P123M (estimated amount only)
    4. Here Comes the Bride P116,028,484
    5. Petrang Kabayo P115,494,375
    6. Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To P109M (estimated amount only)
    7. You to Me Are Everything P98,560,645
    8. Babe, I Love You P96,185,439
    9. Paano Na Kaya P82,023,631
    10. Hating Kapatid P81,978,652
    11. Dalaw P66M (estimated amount only)
    12. In Your Eyes P62,775,365
    13. Cinco P60,755,512
    14. Till My Heartaches End P60,476,687
    15. Sa 'Yo Lamang P50,230,216
    16. I Do P42,441,264
    17. I'll Be There P42,205,231
    18. Shake, Rattle & Roll XII P40M (estimated amount only)
    19. Working Girls P32,326,254
    20. White House P23,027,565
    21. Mamarazzi P21,559,704
    22. RPG Metanoia P21M (estimated amount only)
    23. Super Inday and the Golden Bibe P14M (estimated amount only)
    24. Rosario P13M (estimated amount only)
    25. Noy P9,947,742
    26. Father Jejemon P6M (estimated amount only)
    27. Emir P3,089,773

Dolphy wins both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards in the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival

Comedy King Dolphy was honored both as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in the 36th Metro Manila Film Festival.

The awarding was held tonight during the festival's Gabi ng Parangal at the Meralco Theater.

Only the Top 3 nominees for each category were announced.

Dolphy won as Best Actor for "Father Jejemon" beating Vic Sotto ("Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote") and Yul Servo ("Rosario").

For the Best Supporting Actor award, Dolphy won for "Rosario" and was the top choice over Alwyn Uytingco (Ang Tanging Ina Mo: Last Na 'To), Roy Alvarez (Father Jejemon) and Sid Lucero (Rosario).

It's Dolphy's first Best Supporting Actor award from MMFF but already his second time to win Best Actor. He previously won in the 1990 MMFF for the movie "Espadang Patpat".

The Best Actress trophy meanwhile went to first-timer Ai-Ai delas Alas for "Ang Tanging Ina Mo: Last Na 'To". She bested Marian Rivera ("Super Inday and the Golden Bibe") and Carla Abellana ("Shake, Rattle & Roll 12").

It was a big surprise that Jennylyn Mercado who was highly praised for her performance in the movie "Rosario" was not even one of the Top 3 nominees for Best Actress.

MMDA indeed granted Ai-Ai's wish to give her the award. She has been longing for it. She even kneeled down on national T.V., begging the MMDA to let her win as Best Actress.

Other acting awards went to Eugene Domingo as Best Supporting Actress and Xyriel Manabat as Best Child Performer both for "Ang Tanging Ina Mo: Last Na 'To".

Eugene, who already won the same award in 2007 MMFF for "Bahay Kubo", triumphed over Alessandra De Rossi and Gina Pareño both for "Dalaw".

MMFF 2010 Awards Night - Winners: "Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To" wins 9 trophies, including Best Picture

MMFF 2010 Awards Night or Gabi ng Parangal was held Sunday night, December 26, 2010, at the Meralco Theatre.

That's only one day after the festival officially opened nationwide and definitely, the results of the awards night will make an impact on the box-office performance of the movie.

Big winner was Star Cinema's "Ang Tanging Ina Mo: Last Na 'To" which won 9 of the 20 categories. And 7 of those 9 awards were really major ones.

Star Cinema for sure never expected "Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To" to win as Best Picture and even Wenn Deramas as Best Director 'coz the movie didn't even get a grade from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

Direk Wenn accepted most of the awards for the movie, including the Best Supporting Actress trophy for Eugene Domingo, who wasn't there to accept the award.

And when his name was called as Best Director, he himself was visibly surprised. "Naawa lang ata kayo sa 'kin sa pagbalik-balik ko dito sa stage...Sobra-sobrang bonus na po ito," he said in his acceptance speech.

"Rosario" meanwhile which got an A from the CEB was only the 2nd biggest winner, with 7 awards. Its director, Albert Martinez, was not even included in the Top 3 nominees for Best Director.

Aside from Direk Wenn, other nominated directors were Mike Tuviera (Super Inday and the Golden Bibe) and Louie Suarez (RPG Metanoia).

"RPG", another A-rated movie, won 4 trophies, "Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote" had 2 awards while 1 each for "Super Inday and the Golden Bibe" and "Father Jejemon".

Shockingly, "Dalaw" which got a B grade and stars the President's sister Kris Aquino was totally shut off from winning any of the awards. Was it intentional?

On The Buzz Sunday afternoon prior to the Awards Night, Kris Aquino was quoted saying this: "Pinapaubaya ko na po sa kanila ang award, kasi baka batikusin lang po ang pamilya namin at si Presidente Noy."

Regal Films' "Shake, Shattle & Roll 12" also won nothing.

Check out the complete list of winners in the 2010 MMFF:

Looking at the picture, close na sila ni Kim no? Nakaakbay na nga eh!

Alex's last stint on GMA was searching for a date on "Take Me Out". He's also the same guy in Gerald Anderson's Clear Blacklight Challenge TVC.

It's actually a comeback for Alex on ABS-CBN. PBB fans for sure would remember him as Wendy Valdez's ex-boyfriend.

The name "Alex Castro" became popular online during the time when Wendy was a housemate of PBB Season 2. He even guested that time on PBB Uplate in support of Wendy.

"Your Song Presents: Maling Akala" is soon to air on ABS-CBN Sunday afternoon with Ms. Ai-Ai delas Alas leading the cast. It's also the comeback show and first acting showcase for PDA Season 2 4th Runner Up Van Roxas (or Van Pojas), who was away for awhile.
